Street Style: Fashion of Necessity
This is not your supermodel sipping an espresso at a French cafe with a film director Street style. This is the style of the born out of the daily grind.
A puddle of some unknown liquid, trash not quite making it to the containers, the peeling sign of a relic of the past struggling to maintain its relevance, while bracketed by cranes lifting up the new Johannesburg from the detritus of the old.
Directly below the bridge from where the opening image was taken lies the Noord Street taxi rank. Here people gather from all over the continent to mirror the city in its struggle for gradual regeneration.
The streets become entirely blocked to traffic as bales of clothes are wheeled out as the sun rises and those unable to afford retail stores brush shoulders with fashionistas that know trendy gems lie in the rough of these unassuming clothes.
